The Root of Disease: Stress and Tension
Within the last century or two, diseases have sprung up with new dimensions, expressions and manifestations, and this has reached a peak in the last decade. Medical science has eradicated the great plagues of the past, but we are now faced with a new epidemic of stress related disorders caused by our inability to adapt to the highly competitive pace of modern life.
Psychosomatic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, migraine, asthma, ulcers, digestive disorders, chronic pain, allergies, and skin diseases originate in the mind, but manifest in the body. These diseases have deep psychological roots—stress, anxiety, unresolved emotions, and mental fatigue. Even cancer and heart diseases stem from this chronic stress and tension.
Modern medical science has been trying to tackle these problems in many ways has made incredible advances with life-saving drugs, yet it has failed to deliver true health. This is because the real problem does not lie in the body; it originates in our changing ideals, in our way of thinking, feeling and being. There is dispersion of life energies at all levels which has led to imbalance and lack of harmony in every sphere of existence, including our body and mind.
In today’s world, we are constantly running—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Deadlines, responsibilities, and the pressure to keep up with life’s demands create a state of chronic stress. This stress doesn’t just affect our mood; it seeps into our nervous system, disrupts our hormones, weakens our immune system, and lays the foundation for disease.
Healing and health in the true sense, therefore, cannot just be about treating symptoms. It must address the root cause — stress and tension stored in the mind and body.
To break this cycle of chronic stress and disease, the first step is deep relaxation. Only when we release stored tensions and shift the body and mind into a state of ease can true healing begin.
What is True Relaxation?
Most people think relaxation means lying down, watching TV, or taking a break. But true relaxation is a state where:
✅ The body is completely at rest.
✅ The mind is free from unnecessary thoughts.
✅ The emotions are stable and balanced.
✅ The nervous system shifts from stress mode to healing mode.
This is when real healing begins.
Yoga Nidra – The Doorway to Deep Healing
One of the most profound ways to access this deep relaxation is the powerful practice of Yoga Nidra, often called “yogic sleep.” But Yoga Nidra is not just sleep—it is a systematic method that guides you into a state between wakefulness and sleep.
Beneath the conscious waking mind lies the subconscious and unconscious layers of the mind where our deep rooted samskaras and vasanas (emotions) lay embedded. These samskaras shape our thoughts, beliefs, and personality and are often at the root of psychosomatic disorders.
Yoga Nidra is a powerful practice that allows the body to enter a state of profound relaxation by withdrawing the senses and mind from the external world (pratyahara) and gradually and effortlessly directing the mind to become one-pointed. The brainwaves slow down, shifting from active Beta waves to relaxed Alpha and Theta waves. This allows the awareness to have direct access of the subconscious and unconscious realms of the mind.
As a samskara is triggered during Yoga Nidra, the corresponding emotions arise. The practitioner is guided to witness these emotions, even if they are difficult and painful, in a relaxed state while maintaining a ‘witness awareness’, allowing a natural release of repressed tensions. Some of the deepest knots of our psyche can dissolve in the state of deep relaxation induced by Yoga Nidra.
As the energy dissipations of the mind stop, it becomes extremely receptive and that is when the seeds of transformation in form of sankalpa or intention can be planted in the mind.
Why Yoga Nidra is More Powerful Than Willpower Alone
Most of us are intellectually convinced about what is good or bad for us. We know we should reduce stress, eat well, think positively and have the right attitude. Yet, we struggle to change because intellectual conviction alone is not enough—we must also be emotionally receptive to new ideas and patterns.
This is where Yoga Nidra works like magic.
When the mind is calm and flowing at one smooth level, whatever is impressed upon it in that moment becomes the corrective, the destiny. It’s like planting seeds in fertile soil—without the usual distractions and resistance of the waking mind.
Through this process, Yoga Nidra helps in:
🌱 Releasing deeply rooted fears, negative emotions, and limiting beliefs.
🌱 Reprogramming the subconscious with positive and creative impressions.
🌱 Healing past traumas and burning old samskaras (habitual patterns).
🌱 Enhancing learning, creativity, memory, and inner clarity.
🌱 Restoring the body’s natural self-healing abilities.
Healing Begins with Relaxation
If we want to heal our diseases, we must first learn to relax and let go of that which is causing the problem — stress, fear, emotional tension, and conditioning. Yoga Nidra gives us access to the deeper layers of our being, to bring out real change effortlessly.
Relaxation is not a luxury—it is a necessity for healing. Yoga Nidra is the bridge from stress to transformation, from suffering to freedom.
