The Yogic way to overcome stress

Our lives have become more stressful than before. Partially, the reason for this is our hectic work schedule, too many desires, and our lifestyle. But, that’s not the whole story.. there is something more to it which is at the root of all stress.

At the core of it, stress is because of the way we manage our emotions.

Emotions run our lives.

Normally when we come across any adverse situation or even remember a past painful memory, it evokes an emotional reaction in us – which could be emotions of shame, grief, guilt, regret, hatred, fear, or anger.

There are usually 2 ways in which we normally deal with these negative emotions – either we express it, which does not bring any relief. On the contrary it keeps us into the loop of another set of negative emotions as a post effect- may be blame, guilt and so on…

The second way we deal with negative emotions is to suppress or repress them. That ways we push them deep into subconscious minds. However, out of sight is not out of mind. It lingers, causing pain & making us emotionally vulnerable.

There is a better way to manage our negative emotions and reduce the stress in life.

While we say that certain practices like asana, and pranayama will help you reduce your stress, and honestly it does to some extent, but these practices are just scratching the surface, of something which has deeper roots, at the level of our minds and psyche.

To deal with our negative emotions then, is an exercise of educating and training our minds everyday. Training our mind to “let go” of the emotions which bother us. In Yoga this is done through ‘svadhaya’, which is a process of deep introspection, inner cleansing or mental detoxification, and meditation.

There is no better way, in fact there is no other way.

The more easily and quickly we can let go of and surrender our negative emotions, the faster we can overcome our stresses, and the more peaceful our life will become.

Love & Light!
